Karen MacKechnie
CCAP Support Scientist
I’ve lived in Oban all my life and have had various jobs in different career sectors. I joined the CCAP team in February 2017 as a part time laboratory assistant preforming the main task of preparing sterilised culture media but quickly became involved in other tasks and taking on more responsibilities which led to becoming a full time support scientist and deputy laboratory manager. I am now extremely lucky to have a job I enjoy, much to the envy of friends and family.
As a support scientist for CCAP, I am responsible for the sub-culturing and maintenance of many stains in the collection including the cyanobacteria, brown algae, and protozoa which can be supplied to customers. I support other cryopreservation and molecular activities within CCAP and I’m also involved in the phytoplankton monitoring programme at SAMS.
